Dental Crowns

Crowns (or caps) sit over a tooth to hold a tooth together to create a stronger chewing platform.

What are Tooth Crowns

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cover that repairs and restores a damaged, weak teeth or a tooth that has suffered decay.

Crowning a tooth involves cutting down the tooth to create an upturned plant pot shape (peg) for a custom-created tooth (cap) to be cemented onto.

The Benefits of a Dental Crown

  • A custom made tooth-shaped cap which strengthens a tooth giving a better longevity

  • Prevents fractures and supports the tooth if a tooth has been root-filled

  • Improves the look of a tooth if it has a large filling

How The Dental Crown Process Works

1

The first step to fitting a crown on your tooth, is preparing the tooth. Preparation takes approximately an hour. We scan the tooth and the scan is sent to a laboratory in Leeds.

2

A white aesthetic temporary tooth is created as part of the preparation.

3

Two weeks later we will try on the custom made tooth crown.

4

If you and our dental team are happy with the dental crown we will cement using a light cured cement or a chemically cured one.

5

Sometimes a little adjustment is needed but this is very rare.

The Type of Dental Crowns Available

There are many different crown types. Tooth coloured crowns include porcelain bonded to metal, emax or zircon. We also provide gold crowns.

We will discuss your dental crown requirements and wishes to make sure you get the crown you want and need.

Frequently Asked Questions

There are different costs depending on your requirements - this will be discussed at the consultation appointment.

How much does a tooth crown cost?

If looked after, a dental crown can last for decades. If not then crowns sometimes only last months. We have seen fifty year old crowns looking amazing due to proper dental care.

How long do dental crowns last?

We always recommend normal cleaning, with a manual or electric toothbrush, interdental brushing and floss. Regular professional cleaning and polishing is also recommended for most people and will be planned as part of the routine check up appointment.

How do I clean my crown?

We tend to recommend not eating on the crown for an hour after it’s fitted. This allows you to start getting used to it - but yes you will be able to use the crown as normal.

Will I be able to eat on the dental crown?

Yes we will endeavour to get the best colour match as we can. If the dental crown is at the front of your  mouth, we may invite you to help with shade selection.

Will the crown be the same colour as my teeth?

Sometimes the porcelain may come off a bonded crown - in this instance if the aesthetics are acceptable then it can be left. However usually a broken dental crown will need replacing as it can become a food trap.

Can a dental crown be repaired or does it always need to be replaced?

The preparation of a dental crown will usually be carried out under local anaesthetic - so should not be painful. Post operatively the tooth may be sensitive and we sometimes recommend using toothpaste as a cream to help with this or standard painkillers if you are able to take them.

Is the dental crown procedure painful?

You should start getting used to the new crown within hours of the crown being fitted. If there are any issues though a review appointment can be arranged.

What is the recovery time for a new dental crown?
