Periodontal Treatment for Gum Disease

Sometimes brushing alone isn’t enough to keep teeth clean and healthy. A deep teeth cleaning and periodontal treatment may be needed if you are experiencing gum disease.

What is Gum Disease Treatment?

If your gums are inflamed they will bleed when you clean them, other symptoms of gum disease include swollen or red gums. But you may not even know you have gum disease.

If the gums are not cleaned, food is trapped or there are underlying health issues then the gum inflammation can result in the loss of the bone holding the teeth in place - this is then known as periodontal disease. Teeth can be lost through periodontal disease, so it’s important to seek treatment from a dentist.

Periodontal treatment is the cleaning of the periodontium - the teeth above and all of the gums. The deep teeth cleaning is to help the gums to heal and the inflammation to subside.

The Benefits of Gum Disease Treatment

  • Periodontal disease and gum disease can lead to tooth mobility and loss -  cleaning the teeth and gums can help reduce this loss

  • Gum disease has been linked to cardiac problems - therefore keeping the gums healthy is important for health

  • Gum disease has also been linked to bad breath because food catching around teeth rots and the bacteria can be smelly

  • If teeth are kept clean and maintained well at home - then they should last for a lifetime. Even teeth that have had previous gum disease can last forever

The Periodontal Treatment Process

1

If your dental practitioner diagnoses gum disease or periodontal disease then they will prescribe a course of treatment.

2

Sometimes this is a series of deep cleaning appointments using local anaesthetic (numbing injection).

3

We will then review your at-home cleaning and the response of the gums.

4

The most important part will be how you engage with the new cleaning regimen at home.

5

More cleaning may be required - or a maintenance phase of regular three monthly cleans.

Types of Gum Disease Treatment Available

Our periodontal treatments for gum disease usually include a deep clean. Our experienced dental team uses an ultrasonic scaler and hand scalers to clean teeth and gums. During cleaning we’ll use high speed suction to remove the water spray.

Sometimes we will put a gel into the pockets in the gums as this can help with cleaning your gums and teeth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Bleeding when brushing is the earliest sign of gum disease. If you experience bleeding, bad breath or wobbly teeth you may have gum disease. Regular dental check ups and gum checks can help prevent gum disease and prevent early symptoms. Speak to our team today.

What are the common symptoms of early gum disease?

Yes, professional dental advice should be sought. Early treatment of gum disease can arrest the process and put in place good cleaning patterns. This can sometimes mean the more advanced periodontal disease does not follow on.

My gums bleed when I brush, should I see a dentist?

Sometimes deep teeth cleaning can be painful. We will use a local anaesthetic (injection) if the cleaning is going to be very deep so the treatment should not be painful.

Does periodontal deep teeth cleaning hurt?

Yes, disease of the periodontium, the bone holding the teeth in place, can lead to tooth loss. That’s why it’s important to have regular dental check ups and good tooth cleaning practices at home.

Can periodontal disease lead to tooth loss if left untreated?

Sugary foods are linked to gum disease and decay. Reducing sugar certainly helps reduce the incidence of all forms of dental problems.

What foods contribute to periodontal issues?
