What are Dental Implants?
A dental implant is a small titanium screw that serves as the replacement for the root portion of a missing natural tooth. Dental implants can be placed in either the upper or lower jaws, to replace just one tooth or all your teeth and any amount in between.
As anchor points, implants can also securely attach a denture. Due to the biocompatible properties of titanium, a dental implant fuses with the bone and becomes a good anchor for the replacement tooth. Dental implants can be used in solutions for replacing single or multiple missing teeth. They’re a solution that is stand alone and does not require preparation of adjoining teeth. Dental implants are a safe, medically proven alternative that can deliver confident function.
The Benefits of Dental Implants
A permanent restoration that will last for years to come
No need to wear dentures which can move about in the mouth and restrict what you eat
No healthy teeth are prepared next to the implant as they stand alone
Implants can give you confidence to smile and eat, without fear of embarrassment
How The Dental Implant Process Works
What is involved in having an implant? The dental implant process involves several steps that take place over a time period that averages from six to nine months. You will need a consultation and CT scan to plan your treatment before it can start - The typical process will then include:
1
The initial implant placement, when the dentist places the implant into your jaw, is performed at Courtyard Dental surgery under a local anaesthesia.
2
Over the following months, bone will integrate with the surface of the implant anchoring it into position.
3
A review appointment will be booked to check on progress.
4
The next appointment - called the second stage: is where an additional minor procedure is performed under local anaesthetic. This creates an opening through which your artificial tooth will emerge.
5
Final stages: During these phases, if you are having crowns on your implant then, the dentist attaches a special post to the implant and digitally takes impressions to allow your final restoration to be made. Four weeks later your crown or bridge would be ready to fit. If dentures are being fixed by implants then you will usually need 3-4 appointments to make and fit the dentures.
